Here's the way to make PC as a service using thin clients over broadband really attractive: Do something useful. Do something that every household in America needs or if they don't need it, wants. If you are Comcast or a telco with DSL service who wants to take action on the PC-as-a-service idea presented by Om Malik ,help me organize all this paper that comes into the house. Start off by getting the medical claim forms, status papers and spending account info. Then add in a central place for bank and brokerage statements, donation receipts. Let me take ten seconds a page when that stuff comes into the house to put it thorough a scanner, and five seconds of fun putting it through the crosscut shredder.
We have the scanner that, on the mac at least works great. You can buy one through the link at SDRNews Shop in a few days. This is the opportunity for PC-as-a-service - not the client for routine applications, but the client that will simply take a scanner, connect it transparently to the cloud, let me get rid of that paper but make me confident that whenever I need it it's safe in a searchable PDF and put it where I can pull the content, electronically, whereever I want it. Put that it the cloud, sell the scanner/terminal/KVM client for the retrieval.
You have backup, you clear up the clutter in the family home office, kitchen table and that $7 a month service charge will cover the hardware subsidization. If you don't sell me junk hardware and don't load it up with every other thing that I might imagine that I would need, you will have a winner.
